An educational overview of prebiotics and probiotics hosted by distinguished global leaders. The scientific presentations included in this program were taped in front of a live studio audience of physicians and other health care professionals at NBC’s Studio 6A; Rockefeller Center, New York City. Dr. Ekhard Ziegler, Professor of Pediatrics, University of Iowa, introduced the program and Gigi Veereman, MD, PhD, Head of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Queen Paola Children’s Hospital and University Hospital in Antwerp, Belgium served as moderator.
Program Objectives:
* Describe the development and diversity of the normal intestinal microbiota.
* Define probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics.
* Identify the biological effects of pre and probiotics in alternating gut function in GI health and disease.
* Discuss the current levels of evidence supporting the use of prebiotics in infant.

Bio:
Berthold Koletzko, MD is Professor of Pediatrics and Head of the Division of Metabolic Diseases and Nutritional Medicine at Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital, University of Munich Medical Center, Munich, Germany. His research interests include metabolism and nutrition in childhood, pregnancy and lactation, metabolic diseases, and clinical nutrition. He is the coordinator of the European Childhood Obesity Group and the Early Nutrition Programming Project (www.metabolic-programming.org). Dr. Koletzko is the author or coauthor of 603 publications, including 215 original papers, 226 reviews, 148 book chapters, and 19 books. He serves on the editorial boards of numerous national and international journals, including Clinical Nutrition (Section Editor, Pediatrics) and Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care (Section Editor, Pediatrics).
Glenn R. Gibson, PhD is Professor of Food Microbial Sciences and Head of the Food and Microbial Sciences Research Unit at the University of Reading, Reading, United Kingdom. His previous posts were as Head of Microbiology, Institute of Food Research, Reading, and Research Scientist at MRC Dunn Clinical Nutrition Centre, Cambridge. He has published more than 300 research articles, 10 patents, and 5 books on gut microbiology. He gives an average of 40 science lectures at international conferences each year and sits on five advisory panels in Europe and the United States, two of which he chairs. His main research interest is the role of human bacteria in health and disease. .
